Smart Pick of the Day: Domesticated at Lincoln Center

Tonight I was electrified by Bruce Norris’ new play Domesticated, commissioned by and performed at Lincoln Center Theater. Their website is advertising the play, accurately, as a “conflagration of gender, power, sexuality and politics that emerges in a private relationship after a public humiliation.”  Anna D. Shapiro (Tony-winning director of August: Osage County) understands the complexities of Norris’ ideas and isn’t afraid to drag shame and humiliation centerstage (the in-the-round Newhouse Theater makes for engaging storytelling). The many cringe-worthy elements are delivered with precision and intensity by a very talented cast, including Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Goldblum. I got a minor workout just squirming in my seat. If you pride yourself on your political correctness, I dare you to go see this show.

Domesticated opens next week (Tuesday 10/22) at the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater at Lincoln Center. Check out Lincoln Center’s awesome LincTix program, which enables theatergoers to buy relatively cheap tickets to their shows.
